Unexpected overdue GitHub billing ($47.47) despite Copilot Pro payment — Copilot stopped working

I am facing an unexpected GitHub billing issue and would like clarification.

Timeline:

Nov 2025: Used 1-month GitHub Copilot free trial

Dec 2025 – early Jan 2026: Copilot continued working

Jan 2, 2026: Copilot stopped working in VS Code

I then purchased GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/month), and the subscription shows as Active

However, my account now shows $47.47 overdue, and paid services (including Copilot) are not working

What’s confusing:

Billing → Licensing shows Copilot Pro active

Usage reports show Copilot usage with Billed amount = $0

Despite this, GitHub shows an overdue balance and blocks Copilot

It’s unclear what services make up the $47.47, as Copilot Pro is only $10/month

Questions:

What exactly contributes to the $47.47 overdue amount?

Why does Copilot show as Active while being blocked due to billing?

Is this overdue related to usage during or after the free trial (Copilot, Actions, Codespaces, etc.)?

How can users clearly see pending charges before services are suspended?

Any clarification would be appreciated, as the billing behavior was unexpected.

1. Go to Settings → Billing & plans → Payment history / Invoices and look for any unpaid invoices or failed payments.
2. Check Billing → Usage to see if Actions, Codespaces, or other metered services generated charges that added up to $47.47.
3. Confirm you’re looking at the correct billing account (personal vs any org you belong to). An org invoice can affect your access if you’re billed through an org.
4. Verify your payment method and recent bank/credit-card transactions for declined attempts or refunds. Update the payment method if needed.
5. Check your email (and spam) for billing notices from GitHub that include invoice numbers and payment failure details.
6. If you find an unpaid invoice, pay it or update the payment method; that usually restores blocked services.
7. If nothing obvious appears, contact GitHub Support with the invoice number (or a screenshot of the overdue $47.47) and your recent payment receipt for Copilot — ask them to explain which services created the charge and why access remains blocked.
